Life on a Cruise Ship: The Basics

Working on a cruise ship is a unique experience that combines intense work schedules with the opportunity to see the world. It's not a vacation – it's a job that requires dedication, adaptability, and resilience. This guide provides insights from those who have lived and worked at sea.

Work Schedule

Expect to work 10-14 hours daily, 7 days a week, for 6-7 months straight with few or no days off.

Living Arrangements

Most crew share cabins with 1-3 others. Higher positions may get single cabins.

Financial Opportunity

Save money with no expenses for food or housing. Pay varies widely by position and cruise line.

Contract Length

Typically 6-7 months on board followed by 1-2 months of vacation.

Port Time

Varies by position. Some roles get most port days off, others rarely leave the ship.

Social Life

Crew areas include bars and recreation spaces. Many describe it as a "ship family" atmosphere.

Personal Experiences

The best way to understand cruise ship work life is through the experiences of those who've lived it. Here are some firsthand accounts from former crew members:

The Good Times

Many crew members describe their experience as having a job that was challenging but a life that was amazing. While the pay is relatively low, you're living a bill-free life. You're getting to travel and make friends from all over the world. Some crew aren't there for the money but for the experiences.

What other job can have you standing on a glacier in Alaska, watching volcanoes erupt in Hawaii, snorkeling in the Caribbean, and walking around Rome all in the space of a few months?

The Reality Check

The work is demanding, often for below minimum wage by Western standards, and the living conditions can be cramped. It's not glamorous, and many people quit within their first contract because of the hard work and challenging lifestyle.

Working 70+ hours a week without a single day off for 6-9 months in a row, usually with a stranger in a very small room, away from home, can be difficult. You never truly go "home" and disconnect from work during your contract.

The Balanced View

Many former crew members look back on their time at sea as the best time of their lives. Some maintain friendships with their shipmates decades later, and some even return to sea after years on land.

The travel opportunities are unparalleled - circumnavigating the globe multiple times, crossing the Atlantic dozens of times, visiting the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Scandinavia - pretty much anywhere accessible by water. And while sea days are busy with work, in port a percentage of crew always get time off.
